Longines Heritage's History and Design Details
Longines’ watchmaking journey began in 1832 when two partners and Auguste Agassiz, founder of Saint-Imier watchmaking company, started creating and selling pocket watches with crown-wheel escapements. Soon after, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz’s nephew took over the company and inaugurated the Longines factory in Saint-Imier in 1867. In the same year was the release of the brand’s first-ever movement, the famed 20H.
Fast forward to 1913, Longinesdeveloped its first-ever caliber for a wristwatch with a single push-piece and began producing shape movements such as oval and rectangular calibers for wristwatches. In 1918, the brand released a model that has become the inspiration for the now known Longines Heritage Military that was rebirthed in 2016, followed by another model developed around the 1940s released in 2018.
By 1919, the brand ventured into aviation as the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation, developing highly accurate navigation tools leading to 1927 when the famous Longines Weems-Second-Setting Watch was born. Around the 1930s, Longines also created watches for the US Army that has become the inspiration for the Avigation Type A-7 model, a modernized version that was released for Longines’ 180th anniversary in 2012 and was again revamped as the Avigation Type A-7 models in 2020. Another model released around the 1930s was the Avigation BigEye that was rebirthed in 2017 and the historic Lindbergh Hour-Angle, inspired by the design of Charles A. Lindbergh, famous for his non-stop flight over the North Atlantic. He designed a navigational instrument that Longines brought to life, which used to help aviators to know their exact geographical situation.
Apart from the rich aviation history of the brand, Longines was also catering to divers. Around the 1960s, the brand released a super compressor model that was relaunched in 2007 as the Legend Diver. Soon after, another iconic diving watch that was resurrected was the Legend Diver 1967 released in 2015.
