Milestones and Innovations

Within the span of four decades, Maurice Lacroix has been able to achieve some truly noteworthy accomplishments.

Official Watch of FC Barcelona

In 2014, Maurice Lacroix signed a three-year partnership agreement with FC Barcelona. Through this, the brand became the official watch partner of the widely-renowned soccer team. To commemorate this event, Maurice Lacroix introduced the watch community and the soccer community to four new models featuring the FC Barcelona crest: the FCB Eliros Date, the FCB Eliros Chronographe, the FCB Pontos S, and the FCB Masterpiece Squelette

Official Watch of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

Maurice Lacroix is also one of the many official sponsors of Red Bull’s Cliff Diving World Series. Although it is pretty unlikely to see someone wear a wristwatch while diving from great heights, there are instances where Maurice Lacroix watches have made an appearance. Some Maurice Lacroix models seen at this event include the Pontos S Supercharged and the Pontos S Diver.

History of Maurice Lacroix

The history of Maurice Lacroix begins in 1975, when the holding company, Desco von Schulthess, manufactured its first line of watches. Named after the company’s Director of Silk in Lyon, France, the new watchmaking establishment Maurice Lacroix unveiled their earliest series of timepieces in Austria. A year after its release, Maurice Lacroix started expanding their market to Spain, Germany, and several other parts of Europe. It was in 1995, when the brand finally acquired an international clientele, which included the United States.

In 1989, Maurice Lacroix sought to broaden their ability to create in-house watch cases by purchasing a dedicated manufacturing plant in Saignelegier. With their new acquisition, the brand no longer had to rely on other establishments and started making their own original cases. As the 1990s dawned, Maurice Lacroix developed and launched their newest collection, the Calypso. Sporting Maurice Lacroix's unique casing, the Calypso featured a seminal design with high-quality specifications. This flagship series was a tremendous success and was a catalyst for the brand's bright future.

Two years after the Calypso’s release, Maurice Lacroix developed a line of high-end watches known as the “Les Mécaniques.” The new collection showcased highly complicated timepieces with unusual components. Each wristwatch utilized a heavily-modified ETA movement, refined to match the brand’s highest standards. Traditional and sophisticated, the Les Mécaniques collection brought the brand to new heights, earning it a spot among high-ranked Swiss watch manufacturers. Years later, Maurice Lacroix let go of the Les Mécaniques moniker and offered it a name that many enthusiasts have become accustomed to, the Masterpiece.

1999 was an accomplished year for Maurice Lacroix. During this time, the company began renovating its case manufacturing plant in Saignelegier. Such actions allowed Maurice Lacroix to increase its production rate and maintain the quality of its watches to cover increased demand. Additionally, this was also the year Maurice Lacroix created their latest Les Mécaniques, the Calendrier Retrograde. This new retrograde watch featured a jumping date function, a power reserve indicator, and a seconds display.

On October 1, 2001, Maurice Lacroix S.A. became an independent legal entity. As a result, Maurice Lacroix began setting up new workshops, allowing them to research and develop more intricate segments for their calibers. Maurice Lacroix then launched their first in-house automatic caliber called the ML-106. The ML-106 boasted improved capabilities and durability. By producing the ML-106, the brand completed its final step in becoming a fully-fledged, exclusive, Swiss watchmaking brand. From then on, Maurice Lacroix released hit after hit with iconic Masterpiece models such as the Masterpiece Square Wheel, the Masterpiece Mysterious Second, and the Masterpiece Gravity.

In 2016, the brand revived its iconic Calypso collection with its latest series, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon. The Aikon collection showcased versatile wristwatches with modernized concepts. Now the brand’s most popular series, the Aikon carries on the legacy of the Calypso by adopting its vintage design features while also incorporating brand-new innovations. The collection started out with quartz watches but progressed to producing mechanical and skeletonized timepieces in 2018.

As of today, Maurice Lacroix stands as an eminently skillful watchmaking brand with more than 4,000 shops across the globe. Despite being a relatively young company, Maurice Lacroix highlights a heritage that matches the experiences of seasoned and long-established brands out there. Traditional yet constantly innovating, Maurice Lacroix is a true competitor in the horologic industry.
