Tudor Heritage Black Bay: Vintage-Inspired Divers

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay is a line of watches inspired by a model from the 1950s. Tudor originally launched the collection as the Oyster Prince Submariner, which was also the Swiss brand’s first attempt at creating diving timepieces. How much does a Tudor Heritage Black Bay watch cost?

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay offers a variety of timepieces that differ in color, size, and price. The most affordable Heritage Black Bay is priced at over $2000 USD while the most expensive retails for over $10000 USD. Below are in-depth explanations of some Heritage Black Bay models available right now.

First up is the Heritage Black Bay Ref. 79230R-0012 model with a more classic look. This watch comes in a 41mm case and bracelet made of stainless steel. Its black dial includes snowflake hands and multi-shaped hour markers with luminescent features. Like most quintessential diving watches, it also has a red unidirectional bezel made out of aluminum. In addition, this piece is powered by a MT5602 calibre with a 70-hour power reserve and 200m water resistance. Priced at $3,800 USD, this is the picture perfect watch for fans of classic divers.

This next Tudor Heritage Black Bay Ref. 79360N-0002 is a lot more distinct compared to the previous one. While it is also presented in a stainless steel case and bracelet, it has a completely different face. The white dial consists of luminescent snowflake hands, circular and triangular hour markers, a date window at 6 o’clock, and two subdials in black. It is equipped with a MT5813 calibre which comes with a 70-hour power reserve as well. Resembling a panda, this automatic watch retails for a little over $8,000 USD.

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight Ref. 79030N-0001 is a very handsome and lavish-looking watch. It has a 39mm stainless steel case and bracelet. Featuring a black unidirectional bezel and dial, this model follows the same layout as other Black Bays with luminescent hands and uniquely-shaped hour markers. Moreover, it is powered by a MT5402 calibre and has a power reserve of 70 hours. The Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight retails for over $4,000 USD and would make a dapper addition to any man’s personal collection.

This Tudor Heritage Black Bay Ref. 79250BB-0001 gives off regal and luxurious vibes. It comes in a 43mm bronze case paired with a fabric bracelet. The dark blue dial follows the typical Black Bay layout but with hints of bronze. The unidirectional bezel is also in blue with hints of bronze which add a lavishly antique feel to the whole piece. Equipped with a calibre MT5601, this Black Bay boasts a 70-hour power reserve and a water resistance of up to 200m. Priced at a little over $5,000 USD, this is definitely an excellent option for those who like vintage-looking watches.

Lastly, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Ref. 79830RB-0003 is a more colorful take on a classic model. It comes in a 41mm stainless steel case along with a textile strap. The black dial includes luminous snowflake hands and multi-shaped hour markers plus a date window at 3 o’clock. Meanwhile, its unidirectional bezel is in blue and red (pepsi). Thanks to its MT5652 calibre, this automatic watch boasts an impressive power reserve of up to 70 hours. Priced at approximately $3,809 USD, this makes a great stylish watch for those who enjoy a pop of color.

History Behind the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Collection

It all began in 1936 when Hans Wilsdorf officially acquired Tudor, previously known as Veuve de Philippe Hüther. Wilsdorf, known as the founder of Rolex, gained exclusive rights to the Swiss brand a decade prior to its acquisition. Since then, Tudor and Rolex have often been associated with each other and are referred to as sister companies.

For Wilsdorf, Tudor was the key to reaching a wider variety of people. The idea was to produce more affordable watches that have the same durability, precision, and quality as Rolex. With the release of the Oyster Prince, shortly after the 2nd World War, the Swiss brand immediately gained the attention of people. This unprecedented popularity led to the launch of, what would be, one of the most iconic lines of dive watches today: the Tudor Black Bay (originally called the Prince Submariner).

The first Heritage Black Bay, on the other hand, was only released fairly recently back in 2012. The concept behind this range is to create pieces that are modern-day interpretations of Black Bays in the past but with new and improved features. The watches aren’t exactly carbon copies of specific models, rather, they are collectively inspired by the essence of past Heritage Black Bays. Regardless, some elements remain the same such as the snowflake hands, hour markers in different shapes, distinct bezel, and impressive water resistance.

5 Reasons to Buy a Tudor Heritage Black Bay Watch

1. Renowned Series

The Heritage Black Bay is one of the most well-acclaimed models among Tudor’s extensive catalogue. With a line that dates back to the 1950s, it is no surprise why many watch connoisseurs and patrons speak highly of this collection. The retro designs from decades ago paired with improved, modern-day features make the Heritage Black Bay a favorite diver in the luxury watchmaking world.

2. Variety of Options

Despite being relatively new, Tudor has released many versions of the Heritage Black Bay in the past couple of years. There are over 60 known variations of the said model listed on the market right now. These Heritage Black Bay timepieces differ in color, size, strap/bracelet, material, and function. You’ll surely find one that fits your personal preferences.

3. Impressive In-House Movement

The original Black Bay was powered by the well-known, traditional ETA calibre. While that version boasted excellent precision and durability, Tudor decided it was time to debut their own in-house movement with the 2012 Heritage Black Bay. The watches in this collection are equipped with variations of the calibre MT5602. This movement boasts a COSC certification, a 70-hour power reserve, and a more durable calibre design.

4. Good Investment

People typically assume that, since Tudor is a sister brand of Rolex, they probably have pretty similar resale value. While that may be true in some cases, Rolex still has stronger brand recognition. In Tudor’s case, only certain collections or models pass off as good investments. The Heritage Black Bay is an example of this. Aside from being one of the Swiss brand’s most popular lines, a good chunk of the Heritage Black Bay models are actually able to hold their value. Of course, this depends on certain factors such as economic fluctuations and rarity of the piece. But, ultimately speaking, getting your hands on a Heritage Black Bay would be considered a good choice, both financially and in terms of taste.

5. Vintage-Inspired

One of the great things about the Heritage Black Bay is how it’s not exactly the rebirth of a certain model. Tudor was able to revive the essence of the original pieces by incorporating retro elements with contemporary features. With the Heritage Black Bay, the key components of old models were highlighted whilst being complemented by the new improvements. The Heritage Black Bay is truly a must-have for vintage enthusiasts out there.

Tudor Heritage Black Bay: Where Past and Present Meet

It is no surprise why the Tudor Heritage Black Bay is so well-regarded by many people. It is a collection that has it all: rich heritage, sophisticated designs, superior quality, and excellent functions. Beyond its vintage-inspired style, the Heritage Black Bay is a reflection of Tudor’s tenacity when it comes to watchmaking. Being able to highlight retro features while utilizing contemporary elements is no easy feat, yet Tudor was able to do it perfectly with the Heritage Black Bay.
