New Panerai Submersible Watches

Panerai Submersible: The Reliable Watch for Divers

Since 1916, Panerai has had a long history working with the royal Italian navy to create heavy-duty water resistant watches. Thus, it is little wonder that their watches are all highly adored by professional divers today, in particular, the Panerai Submersible collection with its 300m water resistance. These dive watches are also paired with other practical diving features such as unidirectional bezels, small date windows and small sub-seconds. For easier readability, the dials display large luminous hour indexes with variations including sticks, dots, and Arabic numerals depending on the model.  The cases are also made of a variety of strong materials including stainless steel, titanium, and gold. Not to mention, they boast a pretty impressive power reserve duration, with a model even having a full length of 144 hours.  All these practical functions add up to form the tough, accurate, and reliable Panerai watches of this series.

How much does a Panerai Submersible watch cost?

Altogether, Panerai Submersible watches approximately retail from $8,700 USD to $189,000 USD. And within this massive price range, you have a plethora of robust dive watches to choose from.

Prices for the Panerai Submersible Automatic Models

Most of the timepieces in the entire Italian collection have dial designs almost similar to the classic Panerai Submersible automatic watches. These models that come in a diversity of colors have a discreet but sporty and dashing design. For instance, the 42mm Panerai Submersible Automatic Ref. PAM00959 has a shark gray dial which is protected by a stainless-steel case and uni-directional ceramic bezel. The navy blue bezel is matched with a dark blue rubber strap. The dial modifications of this automatic watch include a small date window at the 3 o’clock position and a small seconds sub dial at the 9 o’clock marker. The watch is also powered by the in-house Panerai caliber OP XXXIV which gives it a 72-hour power reserve. A brand-new piece of this 300m water resistant model approximately costs $9,800 USD.

Prices for the Panerai Submersible Carbotech Series

The Italian watch brand displayed its innovation through this watch collection. As evident by the  name, Panerai Submersible Carbotech watches are equipped with cases made of carbotech, a substance based on carbon fiber. A timepiece that flaunts this feature is the $17,900 USD Panerai Submersible Carbotech Ref. PAM01616. Protecting the dial of this 47mm model is a black carbotech case which is supported by a black rubber strap. On its black dial are luminous blue hour markers as well as a small date window and seconds sub dial at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions, respectively. Its in-house Panerai caliber P.9010 gives the automatic timepiece a power reserve duration of 72 hours.

Prices for the Panerai Submersible Chronographs

Aside from three hand watches, Submersible also offers a selection of Panerai chronograph watches. The Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nery Edition, for example, is a 300m water resistant timepiece with a titanium case, rubber strap, and automatic movement. At a price of $22,879 USD, you’ll get a tool watch equipped with a 12-hour counter at the 3 o’clock position as well as a small seconds sub dial at the 9 o’clock marker. This chronograph watch’s flyback function and high precision are all backed  by the Panerai caliber P.9100 with a 72-hour power reserve.

Prices for the Panerai Submersible Bronzo Models

Panerai Submersible also has wrist watches equipped with bronze cases instead of the usual stainless steel or titanium. The stunning $17,000 USD Panerai Submersible Bronzo has a bronze case and a bronze ceramic anti-clockwise unidirectional bezel that protects its brown luminous dial. The case and bezel are supported by a dark brown leather strap, giving the watch an vintage appearance. The bronze material ages over time, giving a unique patina look to each watch, so you will be guaranteed a one-of-kind antique-style watch. Despite its dressier appearance, this automatic bronze watch shares the usual characteristics and functions of the other Submersible watches such as a date window, small seconds sub dial, 72-hour power reserve, and 300m water resistance.

Prices for the Panerai Submersible Special Edition

The Italian collection showcases a variety of special edition watches, each sporting well-known functions and features such as date windows, chronograph complication, and many more. Arguably, the most unique special edition Panerai watch is the Panerai Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon GMT - Mike Horn Edition released in 2020. Aside from its significantly large size of 50mm, the $189,000 USD watch has a skeletal dial which shows the P.2005/T calibre powering the hand-wound timepiece. This caliber gives the tourbillon watch an amazing power duration of 144 hours. The intricate skeletal dial showcases several features aside from its tourbillon between the 10 and 11 o’clock positions. A 24-hour counter, power reserve indicator, small seconds sub dial, and GMT functions add on to the complexities of this timepiece. Protecting the ice-blue accented dial is a case and bezel made of EcoPangaea, a recycled material salvaged from Pangaea, the sailboat of South African conservationist and explorer Mike Horn. As a result, there are only five pieces of this special edition 30m water resistant watch available.

Latest Panerai Submersible Models: What’s New?

In 2021, Panerai introduced two new models to the Submersible collection, both powered by the in-house P.900 caliber with a 72-hour power reserve . One of them is the Panerai Submersible ELAB-ID which was the result of the Italian brand’s continuous research and development. This 44mm timepiece heavily uses EcoTitanium in its case, bezel, and dial. This material is an incredibly tough alloy salvaged from solid titanium scrap and chips from aircraft makers. The strap is also made of a special material known as recycled PET. As a result, the model is arguably one of the most durable models in the entire collection. The automatic watch has a simple look with a small seconds sub dial at the 9 o’clock marker. Its clean gray dial brings out the brilliant blue accented dot and stick indices and hour markers, which is paired with a matching grey strap lined with blue stitchings.

Another model introduced in 2021 is the $15,900 USD Panerai Submersible Bronzo Blu Abisso. Just like the aforementioned Bronzo model from this collection, this 42mm watch has a bronze cushion-shaped case. But the dial and leather strap are deep blue in color, giving it a more modern appeal. Its matte blue dial displays  a small date window and small seconds sub dial at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions, respectively. Unlike the above model, its back case is transparent, which shows off the P.900 caliber.

Panerai Submersible's History and Design Details

It’s impossible to discuss the history of Submersible without mentioning the Panerai Luminor, Panerai’s trademark collection. In 1955, American actor Sylvester Stallone noticed a Panerai Luminor watch in a jewelry shop while he was in Italy. Due to Stallone’s adoration of the watch, he requested Panerai to make a special-edition watch for his 1996 movie Daylight. The Italian brand then obliged, and they manufactured the black-dialed Luminor Submersible which was engraved with “Slytech Panerai” at the 6 o’clock marker. Panerai also created another Luminor Submersible with a white dial called “Daylight” after another request from Stallone.

After the successful recognition of the two models, Panerai manufactured Submersible as a separate collection. Just like the Luminor models, Submersible watches are equipped with Panerai’s iconic crown guard. However, some improvements are given to this collection including a deeper 300m water resistance instead of 100m. The Italian watch brand then created unique models in the collection such as the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo in 2011.

And since 2013, Panerai has been introducing newer Submersible models for their clientele to enjoy. Some of these watches include the Panerai Submersible Chrono – Guillaume Néry in 2018 and the Panerai Submersible Verde Militare in 2019. Panerai also introduced newer models that use unorthodox materials such as the aforementioned Submersible EcoPangaea Tourbillon and Submersible ELAB-ID to strongly showcase Italian innovation and creativity.
