NOMOS Glashutte Orion: Minimalist & Stylish Dress Watches

The NOMOS Glashutte Orion collection celebrates the brand’s claim to fame: slender, light, and curved. The collection’s innovations build on itself with each iteration. The newest Neomatik, for one, sports a Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap and DUW 6101 date calibre. Topping it all off are its thin indexes and hands, something that the NOMOS Glashutte brand is also best known for.

There are a number of Orion watches to choose from. At first glance, the watches look similar to each other, but as you further explore the options available, you’ll find that it is their individual details that set them apart. On the whole, watches in the NOMOS Glashutte Orion collection are designed to eclipse time.

How much does a NOMOS Glashutte Orion watch cost?

Prices for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 1989 Watches

Orion’s 1989 collection of timepieces commemorates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are classic NOMOS Glashutte pieces, distinct in style and features. To start, these watches boast a handcrafted caliber called the Alpha. Created by masterful horologists, these are high on precision engineering. However, you must wind it every two days to keep it running in tip-top shape.

One of the Orion 1989’s most popular and stylish pieces is the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 1989 (385). This watch has a galvanized November gray dial adorned with golden hands and indexes. It is the cornerstone of a youthful luxury, unafraid to dazzle with its choice of color. As mentioned, this watch also has a velour leather strap in a dark gray hue. However, unlike other Orion 1989 watches, this strap is especially designed for the special edition 385. It also serves as a visual metaphor for the Berlin Wall’s fall, with colors complementing each other and celebrating togetherness in diversity.

Other features of the Orion 1989 385 include a stainless steel case, a sapphire crystal glass back, and a 30m water resistance. The 385’s diameter is 38mm, making it an aptly-sized men’s watch. It also has a subdial under its logo, giving it a contemporary and minimalist feel. Prices for the 385 sit at a $1,970 to $2,000 USD price range.

Prices for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 33 Models

Following the Orion 1989 is the Orion 33, offering a more vintage but glamorous appeal. While this piece features a simple style, its splash of luxurious colors, along with its 32.8mm diameter, makes it a lovely watch for the ladies.

A prime example of this is the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 33 (328). Known as the ‘Orion 33 Champagne’, this timepiece has a beautiful champagne dial that gleams like ivory. It is well known for its understated style, making it one of the most popular pieces of the Orion 33 collection. Like the watches from the Orion 1989, the timepieces under this collection also run on an Alpha calibre. It has 17 jewels and a 43-hour power reserve specifically.

Returning to the 328’s aesthetic, the Orion 33 Champagne pairs beautifully with its velour light brown leather strap. Its indices also have a special shine to them as they are diamond-polished. The 328’s case is stainless steel front and back, domed with a sapphire crystal glass. As a standard feature, this watch is also 30m water resistant. Its price ranges from $1,900 USD to $2,100 USD.

Prices for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 38 Series

With a diameter of 38mm, the Orion 38 is definitely larger than you would typically expect of a NOMOS Glashutte Orion. In fact, it is 3mm larger than a classic Orion timepiece. Despite this, however, the Orion 38 is regarded as one of the ‘gentler giants’ on this list.

With a piece as precise and minimalist as the NOMOS Glashutte Orion, the devil is in the details. Such is the case for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 384 with its white silver-plated dial glimmering with gold indexes and tempered blue hands. The Orion 384 also boasts a lush Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap. This is one of the best materials to make leather with, giving the timepieces durability and stylistic edge. In spite of its size and material, the 384 makes for a very lightweight piece. Its length is only 7.9mm and its lug width is 19mm.

Like other Orion watches, the 384 has a stainless steel case and sapphire glass dome. Its prices also fall within the common NOMOS Glashutte Orion range of $1,900 USD to $2,000 USD.

Prices for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion Datum Watches

The Orion 38 debuted at BaselWorld 2013. At the time, a larger sized 38mm Orion did not exist, making its debut a talked about event for many watch enthusiasts. In the outskirts of the Orion 38 dwells the Orion Datum or “Date” watches. These feature patented sleek and contemporary date windows. Their dials are what one would expect of an Orion watch: muted but elegant blacks and greys and white-silver plated. All of these watches are galvanized and finished with meticulousness.

One of the Orion Datum’s most standard pieces is the brilliantly white NOMOS Glashutte Orion 381. This piece boasts a high-performing DUW 4101 manual calibre, 23 jewels, and a 42-hour power reserve.

Also known as the “Orion 38 Date White”, this watch ebbs and flows with elegance. It is minimalist like other Orion watches, but has a different regality brought about by its thinly-lined date window in the 6 o’clock index. This timepiece is priced at around $2,430 USD.

Prices for the NOMOS Glashutte Orion Neomatik Models

Following the Datum’s suit of switching up calibres, the Orion Neomatik uses a DUW 6101 date calibre. Larger than most NOMOS Glashutte Orion watches, the Neomatik has a 40.5mm diameter. However, it maintains the Orion’s slim and slender silhouette, only being 3.6mm in length.

Like the Orion Datum, the NOMOS Glashutte Orion Neomatik displays the date on its dial. This date window is also present on the 3 o'clock index. Furthermore, much like the Orion 38, the Neomatik also uses a Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap. This is a thick-leather strap that Orion presents in a thin and smooth silhouette.

Many past Orion innovations live on in the Neomatik. This watch’s use of calibre, style, and features are a product of years of Orion watches. Thus, this is the most contemporary-looking of the collection, as well as its most user-friendly. It uses a date calibre that allows for quick-setting by a simple half turn of the watch’s crown.

The Neomatik also stands out because of its dial colors. A popular offering from the collection, the newer Orion Neomatik 41 (364), has a warm olive gold dial. Compared to other Orion watches, the 364 offers fresh aesthetic value with its dark green tones.

This timepiece has a stainless steel case and sapphire crystal glass back as well as anti-reflective coating. The 364 is also automatic, making it different from classic Orion watches like the 1989. Lastly, this watch can survive more tumultuous environments with its 50m water resistance. Due to its brand new features, the Orion Neomatik costs more than the classic NOMOS Glashutte Orion at $2,950 USD.

New NOMOS Glashutte Orion Models

The NOMOS Glashutte Orion brand has grown even more in the last several years. Two of its newest releases include the NOMOS Glashutte Orion 33 Unisex Duo (319) and the NOMOS Glashutte Orion Neomatik 41 (363)

The Orion 319 shines with its gold indexes and diamond-polished dial. This watch is catered to both male and female patrons, with a moderate diameter of 32.8 mm. Unlike other watches, however, the 319 is only splash proof for 30m. Its calibre still packs a punch though, using the “highly precise” Alpha.2. The Orion 33 duo (319) also boasts a light khaki-colored velour leather strap. This piece costs only around $1,400 USD.

The Neomatik 41 (363), conversely, does what its collection name does best: present beautiful dial colors. This timepiece stands out best because of its elegant midnight blue dial. In addition to this, the 363 has silver rhodium-plated hands, giving the watch a NOMOS Glashutte Orion shine. Thanks to these qualities, the Neomatik 41 (363) makes for a solid dress watch.

Compared to the Duo (319), the Neomatik 363 boasts a larger diameter at 40.5mm. Its case is made out of a durable stainless steel, tripartite material, and its strap uses Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan. As for its water resistance, the 363 can withstand up to 50m. Of course, this watch has the other special properties of the Neomatik such as its date window. Its price does not stray away from earlier models at $2,829 USD.

History Behind the NOMOS Glashutte Orion Collection

A team of passionate engineers and horologists bonded to make NOMOS Glashutte back in 1990. Because of this, the brand began creating their own calibres and style. The brand attributes their work to fine art, something that gets better and better through time.

NOMOS Glashutte entered the game of horology with its four original lines: the NOMOS Glashutte Tangente, NOMOS Glashutte Tetra, NOMOS Glashutte Ludwig, and the NOMOS Glashutte Orion. With these four collections, particularly the Orion, NOMOS designed a curved and gentle case. This made it easy to watch and look at, no matter what age or time period you are in.

Other important design details of Orion watches included their thin minute markers and hour indexes. These made the watch look and feel vintage-contemporary, a style NOMOS Glashutte Orion balances particularly well.

Today, NOMOS Glashutte proudly makes their own calibres. The Orion uses the DUW series, which is a line of slender, hand-wounded, and automatic calibres.
