Tutima Glashütte's Milestones and Innovations

Tutima Glashütte was a pioneer of pilot watches in Germany and its innovation of chronographs. Even after the factory was destroyed after they released the first-ever version of its iconic Grand Flieger, it did not stop the brand from continuously carving its place in the watchmaking industry by innovating, redesigning, and improving their collections. The historical pilot’s watch, despite having only limited pieces, paved the way for the brand to continue its legacy of creating these timepieces which later on became the official pilot’s watch that brought back the brand. Today, Tutima Glashütte remains a thriving German watch company that is in a league of its own.

History of Tutima Glashütte

Tutima Glashütte was born during a crisis. In 1927, Dr. Ernst Kurtz founded two companies: Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashütte AG (UROFA) and Uhrenfabrik Glashütte AG, known as UFAG. The companies first produced pocket watches until the fast-growing demand for wristwatches was slowly taking over specifically for the people in Germany. Soon after, the demand for wristwatches went from having something to look at while driving to having useful watches for pilots. Thus, the birth of the brand’s first-ever chronograph around 1941 as well as the brand-new caliber, Caliber 59 that has a flyback function also known as a tempostopp. The watch was used as the official watch of the air force military pilots and gave Tutima Glashütte an excellent reputation for being a precise and reliable timepiece.

Four years after the legendary release of the pilot’s watches, the company faced a crisis after the factory was destroyed during the war. Luckily, in 1945, Dr. Kurtz was able to move the legacy of Tutima Glashütte in the state of Lower Saxony in the municipality of Ganderkesee which was the start of new beginnings for the brand. Around 1960, Dieter Delecate took over the company and tried to compete with the fast-growing domination of quartz wristwatches. Then in 1985, the company was tapped to create a new military watch known as Tutima Military Chronograph 798 that brought back the company to the top.

Years later, Tutima decided to reproduce and modernize the original 1941 pilot’s watch now known as the Tutima Grand Classic Flieger watches, paving way for the birth of many more collections.
