Mühle Glashütte's Milestones, Awards, and Innovations

Mühle Glashütte’s first ever wristwatch was created in 1995 simply as part of a ship’s time measuring equipment. The first two however which became available for purchase were the “Herren-Sporttaucher-Uhr," a men's sport diving watch and the Marinefliegeruhr-I, a marine pilots' watch. 

In 2000, Thilo Mühle of the 5th generation took over the business as Managing Director alongside his father Hans-Jürgen Mühle. In 2002, they worked with the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service to create the S.A.R. watches for all 56 S.A.R. rescuers.

In 2003, the woodpecker neck regulation was patented to cater to high-impact movements needed in a sports watch. It was specifically designed to be shockproof and extremely robust.

In 2007, Thilo Mühle claimed sole responsibility of the brand. Under his management, he achieved several developments. In 2008, they developed the Muhle three-quarter plate used for Chronograph movements, getting its name as it covers three quarters of the watch movement. It was then modified and became the first calibre designation called the MU 9408. In 2011, another movement was designed but this time it is completely in-house. They call it the MU 9411, the first ever hand-wound movement which premiered in the Teutonia III.

During the year 2014, it celebrated Mühle Glashütte’s 145th anniversary by releasing a manufacturing line called the “R. Mühle & Sohn.” During this year, they also released the RMK 01 and 02 calibres. In 2016, the Robert Mühle Zeigerdatum watch was released where the RMK 03 calibre movement was released. This limited edition watch only has 100 pieces.

In 2019, Mühle Glashütte celebrates its 150 years anniversary by releasing the limited edition moonphase watch. Mühle Glashütte currently has 66 employees, with more than half of the employees participating in the production themselves.

History Behind Mühle Glashütte

Headquartered in Glashütte, Germany, the Mühle Glashütte brand started out as a mechanical workshop owned and founded by Robert Mühle in 1869 after completing his apprenticeship as a precision toolmaker under Moritz Grossman. He specialized in the production of high precision measuring devices like pocket watches that were commonly used during the era. In 1896, he was even awarded the Gold Medal in the City of Dresden for making the most excellent measuring instruments. He was the only manufacturer for dial gauges which are able to record high-level precision at the nearest thousand of a millimetre. This started the long line of generation dedicated to creating precise measuring devices from pocket watches, dial gauges, chronometers, pressure measuring devices, pendulum speedometers, etc.

In 1995, the first wristwatch was manufactured after a request to create a robust water-resistant watch to be used on ships. This marks Mühle's participation in the wristwatch production activities. With their reputation in creating measuring devices at sea, it became natural to the Mühle Glashütte to also apply these in making wristwatches, thereby creating precise and robust sports watches.

Dustin Mühle, the latest member from the 6th generation, is now completing his training as an aircraft mechanic and is also working permanently for the family company since 2018. He’ll be working with his father Thilo Mühle in setting up the business for the Mühle Glashütte brand to continue as an independent family company.
