Mühle Glashütte: Nautical Watches for Everyday Wear

Precision, robustness, and good readability. These are called the three nautical virtues — requirements in professional seafaring to withstand any challenges at sea. Mühle Glashütte, which was first known for creating marine chronometers, ship clocks, and other nautical instruments, entered wristwatch making when it was tasked to create a robust, water-resistant watch to equip seafarers. This became the distinguishing factor of the Mühle Glashütte brand in the watchmaking industry since then. It takes great pride in creating timepieces that also exhibit the nautical virtues at sea and apply it to their timepieces for the daily wearer.

They now have 8 collections including the Mühle Glashütte 29er, Mühle Glashütte Lunova, Mühle Glashütte Panova, Mühle Glashütte Promare, Mühle Glashütte Sea-Timer, Mühle Glashütte Terrasport, Mühle Glashütte Teutonia, and the Tool Watches, specifically, the Mühle Glashütte S.A.R. Under these collections Mühle Glashütte now has 45 models, and 3 in-house movements in total. Each model has a detailed well-planned design from durable stainless steel or titanium cases over a textile, leather, rubber, or stainless steel strap. The scratch-resistant non-reflective sapphire glass display eliminates glare and makes it possible to see time at first glance. Woodpecker neck regulation is a feature added for accurate time display.

Mühle Glashütte watches prices are at median standards. They don’t produce luxury watches but instead create high quality wristwatches for the medium priced market, but more specifically for the wearer with a sporty active lifestyle.

Mühle Glashütte Watch Collections

Prices for the Mühle Glashütte 29er: Ode to the Brand’s Nautical Origin

First up is the Mühle Glashütte 29er collection named after a sailing dinghy or 29er — a reminder to the company’s nautical origin. A 29er is a 2-person sailing skiff that sailors ride on to compete in championships. These skiffs are known to be very fast due to their sleek hydrodynamic hull which could easily go with the speed of wind. They are targeted to young sailors who can maneuver the boat against the skiffs’ inherent stability and high speed. Indeed, all 23 models from this collection are high quality water resistant cases in an overall sporty and classy design.

How much a Mühle Glashütte watch from this collection can range from $1,460 USD to $3,508 USD. Starting with the Mühle 29er developed in 2006 as a mechanical timepiece priced at $1,582 USD. It has an easy to wear 36.6mm diameter and comes in either black or white display and black leather or metal strap. These are the classic watches to wear at a formal event.

The 29er Casual has a blue sea grained-surface color display and straightforward design over either leather brown, suede, or beige gray textile interchangeable strap for every occasion. The 29er classic is exactly 9.35 mm high creating the flattest watch in the current collection, able to cut through, like a sailing skiff, even a slim fit sleeve jacket.

Mühle Glashütte men's watches also include the M29 Classic priced at 1819 USD. It comes in a cream display with black and red markers making it a modern take to the historical measuring instrument, M29 model. The dial includes a rehaut with minute and hour numerals, an easy-to-read function of this timepiece.

Prices for the Mühle Glashütte Teutonia: Cool Chronographs

The very first Mühle Glashütte Teutonia watch was designed in 2002 with a silver-colored dial, and guilloche pattern — an elegant luxurious decoration that also structures a clearly visible dial. Now it has a total of 27 models including Mühle Glashütte men's watches with either a 41 or 42mm diameter, a blue, light, and dark dial, with different straps like leather, leather and rubber, and steel.

In particular, Mühle Glashütte Teutonia II Small Second priced at $2,485 USD, is definitely a watch that means business — something to wear to a corporate meeting. It has an interesting shadow play as a result of using a stepped B-bezel and finely polished, beveled on all sides hand-applied indices.

Among the Mühle Glashütte men’s watches, the Teutonia IV Moonphase designed in 2019 has a rotating moon disc display that shows the moon phase, an approximately 29.5 day lunation. This automatic watch  sports a beautiful blue lancet-shaped hands over a lightly grained surface all inside a high-quality vertical cut case.

The limited-edition Teutonia IV Small Second Gold with only 50 watches released has the most expensive Mühle Glashütte watches price at $12,510 USD. A beautiful combination of midnight blue dial, dark blue leather strap, and an 18 carat yellow gold case, applied indices, hands, and pin buckle. This watch has a beveled roof bezel and a clean finely grained dial.

Prices for the Mühle Glashütte Terrasport: Old-School Pilot Watches

The Mühle Glashütte Terrasport collection is designed based on how the classic pilot watch measures time — equipped with chronographs, navigators, and smaller three-hand watches. It is also a reminder of the classic pocket watches the town of Glashutte is famously known for. With a total of 22 watches inside its collection, the Terrasport watches ranging from 34 to 44 mm diameter can both be worn by men and women. You can choose between a green, light, or dark dial inside a stainless steel or bronze case, and leather or steel strap.

The Terrasport I Chronograph is an automatic beige dial aviator’s watch with high contrast hand markers standing out against the cream display for the best possible readability. Taking particular attention on it’s chronograph function, the hands and hour counters have a meticulous red tip which corresponds to the chronograph scales. The Super-LumiNova applied on the hand markers and indices is a useful feature to read the time even at night.

The Mühle Glashütte Terrasport I Observer priced at $1,775 USD comes in either cream or black display, and a choice of buffalo leather or metal strap. It has the same high contrast design with large hour numerals, small hour circle for tracking the minutes, as well as red markers as Terrasport 1.

For the wearer who is constantly in different time zones, the Mühle Glashütte men’s watches specifically Terrasport IV GMT is something to look out for. It allows a second time zone to be displayed by placing the 24-hour scale on the edge of the dial. So even if you’re in a different time zone, looking at the time won’t be such a task.

Prices for the Mühle Glashütte Panova: Entry-Lever Versatile Timepieces

Among all collections, the Mühle Glashütte Panova is considered an entry-level watch. It is a versatile timepiece with bright-colored radiant display and interchangeable straps. All 12 models exhibit high-quality features from the refined automatic movement, woodpecker neck regulation, and luminescent hand and hour indices. The dial also has a fine cut — a characteristic of the Panova.

The Panova Blue combines timeless blue display with a playfully fashionable orange ostrich leather strap. You can interchange this with other straps in the collection such as the smooth leather if you want to go simple. The Panova Green is no different. You can wear with the same straps as Blue, or between the orange textile and the water-resistant green textile strap.

Choose between the blue, grey, and green display, or have them all. The interchangeable straps will give you several options to wear on your vacation, on a trek to the mountains, or on a casual trip to the store. Change it with the leather straps and you have a perfect watch to wear at dinner. Thinking how much is a Mühle Glashütte watch for this collection? The Panova Mühle Glashütte watches' prices are the same for all models, and one of the cheapest at $1,191 USD.

The split triangle marker points to the double indices for accurate time keeping. Each soldier is given unique engravings with the coordinates of the headquarters and their personal number on the automatic rator.

The Mühle Glashütte Lunova currently only has 5 watches in its collection including the Mühle Glashütte men’s watches Lunova Chronograph, Lunova Date, and Lunova Day/Date. First off with the Chronograph having a function that not only shows the time with a 24 hour display, but can also work to determine ship’s position at sea, and even to measure heart rate. The clear dial renders a slender second color-coded scale on its rehaut. The large numerals to show the date are covered in luminous material to make time visible even at night. Finally, the case surface is the most worth mentioning due to its unusual design.

Mühle Glashütte's Milestones, Awards, and Innovations

Mühle Glashütte’s first ever wristwatch was created in 1995 simply as part of a ship’s time measuring equipment. The first two however which became available for purchase were the “Herren-Sporttaucher-Uhr," a men's sport diving watch and the Marinefliegeruhr-I, a marine pilots' watch.

In 2000, Thilo Mühle of the 5th generation took over the business as Managing Director alongside his father Hans-Jürgen Mühle. In 2002, they worked with the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service to create the S.A.R. watches for all 56 S.A.R. rescuers.

In 2003, the woodpecker neck regulation was patented to cater to high-impact movements needed in a sports watch. It was specifically designed to be shockproof and extremely robust.

In 2007, Thilo Mühle claimed sole responsibility of the brand. Under his management, he achieved several developments. In 2008, they developed the Muhle three-quarter plate used for Chronograph movements, getting its name as it covers three quarters of the watch movement. It was then modified and became the first calibre designation called the MU 9408. In 2011, another movement was designed but this time it is completely in-house. They call it the MU 9411, the first ever hand-wound movement which premiered in the Teutonia III.

During the year 2014, it celebrated Mühle Glashütte’s 145th anniversary by releasing a manufacturing line called the “R. Mühle & Sohn.” During this year, they also released the RMK 01 and 02 calibres. In 2016, the Robert Mühle Zeigerdatum watch was released where the RMK 03 calibre movement was released. This limited edition watch only has 100 pieces.

In 2019, Mühle Glashütte celebrates its 150 years anniversary by releasing the limited edition moonphase watch. Mühle Glashütte currently has 66 employees, with more than half of the employees participating in the production themselves.

History Behind Mühle Glashütte

Headquartered in Glashütte, Germany, the Mühle Glashütte brand started out as a mechanical workshop owned and founded by Robert Mühle in 1869 after completing his apprenticeship as a precision toolmaker under Moritz Grossman. He specialized in the production of high precision measuring devices like pocket watches that were commonly used during the era. In 1896, he was even awarded the Gold Medal in the City of Dresden for making the most excellent measuring instruments. He was the only manufacturer for dial gauges which are able to record high-level precision at the nearest thousand of a millimetre. This started the long line of generation dedicated to creating precise measuring devices from pocket watches, dial gauges, chronometers, pressure measuring devices, pendulum speedometers, etc.

In 1995, the first wristwatch was manufactured after a request to create a robust water-resistant watch to be used on ships. This marks Mühle's participation in the wristwatch production activities. With their reputation in creating measuring devices at sea, it became natural to the Mühle Glashütte to also apply these in making wristwatches, thereby creating precise and robust sports watches.

Dustin Mühle, the latest member from the 6th generation, is now completing his training as an aircraft mechanic and is also working permanently for the family company since 2018. He’ll be working with his father Thilo Mühle in setting up the business for the Mühle Glashütte brand to continue as an independent family company.

Why Should You Get a Mühle Glashütte Watch?

You wouldn’t find any better sports or outdoor watch that is more robust and with a much better time keeping function than a Mühle Glashütte Watch. There is no other company aside from Mühle Glashütte that has an established history in measuring devices, and therefore a trusted source for highly precise timepieces. Apart from these, considering how the German Rescue operation trusted the brand for such a significant task of creating a device to equip its rescuers, you know that all models from this brand demonstrate the same quality. Not to mention the well planned selection of material from rubber leather and textile, non-reflective sapphire crystal display, among many others. All are functional with a versatile design making it possible to wear at any occasion. Finally, the Mühle Glashütte Watches are equipped with features such as patented woodpecker neck regulation for increased accuracy, SuperLumiNova markers for the watch’s visibility at night, etc.

Mühle Glashütte: The Underrated, State-of-the-Art Watches

Mühle Glashütte Watch is definitely the best choice for some middle-priced sports watches. They offer a great selection of fashionable and highly durable timepieces that can withstand any challenges outdoors.
